Advice for parents during the first days
This advice does not replace medical consultation. If in doubt, contact your surgeon.
Yes. Give paracetamol every 6 hours for the first 48 hours, at a dose adjusted to the child's weight. Given regularly, it prevents pain from setting in rather than having to relieve it once present.
A few traces of blood on the diaper in the first hours are common. However, active bleeding — a continuous drip — requires urgent medical attention without delay.
No. This yellowish film is fibrin, a normal part of healing. It disappears on its own within a few days. What should alert you is a foul smell, which does suggest infection.
Do not pull. Soak the stuck area generously with lukewarm water and wait: the diaper will come away on its own without tearing the wound.
Seven days. At every diaper change: clean with lukewarm water or saline without rubbing, apply eosin to the wound to dry it, then a large dab of liniment on the glans and on the diaper.
